new fed to me questions
« on: October 28, 2015, 07:54:06 PM »
Ok now that I have the fed at home, I have a few questions.
with a 2.6a- 7.50 spec, is 2 bolts per side for the rear mount ok? It has the anti rotation bar.
The gentleman who had it before me moved the mid plate out 6 inches so he could fit better (6 ft.+).
I have no problem with it out but the engine sits 2 to 21/2 inches too low.
I need to put a containment pan under the engine so I'd like to raise it up.
1- Put it back the 6 " and see if it comes up? I'll have to move the pedals if I do. it fits good now.
2- Just raise the engine and trans by redrilling/buy a new midplate?
Ideas?
Here is a few pics
Any guess who built it?
The previous owner didn't know.
Thanks in advance
Barry.

It's a stefs racing pan. I'm guessing 2 to 3 inches down. The problem is that the trans pan is just as low. I need to seal it off with the belly pan.

Barry,
moving the motor back will only raise it if it has some "dump" angle. In other words, unless the motor is angled down quite a bit, six inches of rearward movement is not going to raise it up very much. If you raise the motor (with a new mid plate) more than a very minor amount you are going to have to rotate the rear end to match. A shorty 'glide and a long driveshaft will give you a little leeway here but if the package is coupler to coupler alignment becomes more critical.
You need to add two bolts per side for the rear end mount and the outer ones need to have at least a 5" spread (center to center). Bolts need to be 7/16" diameter Grade 5 (min) and you need self locking nuts on them.
Another point---does the frame have an upright at the mid plate?  Quite often when the motor is moved like this the shift does not include the addition of an upright at the new location and with a 6" move that puts a lot of load on an unsupported part of the frame rail and can cause coupler alignment problems as the frame flexes.

Yeah, I am from the south--any further south and I would have been a bloody penguin.

I was referring to from the engine block

A quick measure from the rear of the block by the rear seal is 6 inches to the bottom of the pan. So probably 7 inch deep pan.

Had a look at some pics and I'll have to move it back to where it was.  There's no upright in the new location.

While 4 bolts per side on the RE is the spec, some tech's will allow the 2 per side because of the dragsters that have suspension.  Best is to strip the frame down and with a lineup bar, re-set the driveline to what you need and to meet current specs. You will spend more time and effort trying to make what you have work then doing it right in the first place.
Second thing is get the book out on mounting the belts!  NEVER-NEVER-NEVER mount the shoulder straps that low and long(3"-4" below shoulders) and NEVER to the same tube as the chute tow line. Whoever previously teched that car at the track should be forced to eat the rule book

A dragster/ funny car pan doesn't set as deep, but runs the length of the engine.  I wouldn't push the engine back, but I would set it at the height you want it (as long as that is level to a 2* nose down off parallel with your surface table.

If its was me.I would rework mounts for rear end and raise motor and make new plates. You get everything into lot better etuo and very little expence.
