on a standard setup it is just exactly as msundstrom stated. i have only had strouds and i like them.  a buddy packs his without the containment bag.  neither one of us has had any issues.  i have always used the bag.  its not a big deal to pack and is simple to do.  Stroud has a video on how to pack the chutes on their website.

fyi, BTE has a black friday sale 20% off on convertors and trans.  I have their bolt together one and it works well for 7.0 fed.  i had them setup another stator too when i purchased it a few years ago.  was about 2k.

Should be able to duplicate the float less system that was used years ago. Needles and float removed for unrestricted flow.  Bowls were tapped for fuel outlet line (don't) remember size of fitting but larger than inlet. Located so fuel never gets above normal high mark when using floats. It is now constant flow , use low pressure and high out put alky compatible pump.  As long as pump can supply more volume than what engine can pull through the jets you are golden. The jets and circuits must flow a bit more than double the amount of gas by weight. I have some charts stashed some where . I will look.  This system was used for a while on VW& porsche powered off road race cars to combat float bounce flooding problems .  Also used to use Methanol fuel in Mikuni motorcyle carbs for drag racing. Did not have to delete floats on those. Just used correct jets , needles , and needle jets (emulsion tubes) in order to flow larger volume required. As far as the Mods to the down draft webers info should still be floating around on internet. I think it was called constant flow or floatless system. I can't remember that far back. internet search should come up with this stuff if I can't find it on book shelves.

there was an article in hot vw's back in the 80's one time on (what they called it)  full flowing the carbs.  tried to find it a few years ago but no luck.   aside from having enough volume i dont think the jets can be opened big enough to provide the fuel.

i know on the aircooled vw's with 48's (same design but two port) with alky they were not able to flow enough when you start to get up to about 300hp.  problem is bowl size mostly, not enough volumn in the bowl to keep up.  in the bowl, you can cut that web in there and increase the bowl a little bit.  youll probably have to go to 300 needle and seats and drill the piss out of the jets.  a guy (and icon in the vw industry) to talk to would be Gary Berg.  he is rebuilding the IDA'a and they look immaculate when he is done. he is in so cal.

watch out how much boost he is planning to run and max psi for the pump.  meaning if he is going to stick with 45lbs or so for base and plans on running 40lbs of boost or more see what max psi is for the pump.  if its 80 or 100 might look at something different.  further, if he plans on running higher base say 80 or 100 psi then 40lbs or more  then he needs something that has max 160 lets say (wont find a elec. pump for that) .   this is on gas... i used magna fuel 4303 pump with i think 120pis max.  i was going to run higher base (70) fuel pressure to help atomization out a bit and about 35psi.  that put me right there without any buffer.

i would use a mechanical pump with the setup if he plans to run alky. if not, i would look at the magna fuel pumps, as mentioned i have the 4303 but i would look at the 4703.   he might call Eserini as they have been messing with the vr6 for years and have the fastest vr6 RED.   super cool people and will help him out.  http://www.eseriniauto.com/     its an old vid but you get the pic.  i think they are in the 6's now.

the big boys run mechanical as thats the only way they can get the volume they need.

what injectors, ecu, etc?

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: nitro mixture with 02 aensor
« on: January 10, 2020, 07:28:08 PM »
so lets take some things into consideration.  i think first need a rough idea of horsepower to calc out fuel needed.  then assuming its not making 5300hp like some pro mods you could calc out lambda to see if possible.  reason why i say a pro mod, as mentioned at one time i talked to moran when i purchased some injectors from him for my car (which were too big - my fault)  he told me his ride was 2.9-3.2 afr meth.  now really need to work in lambda for calculations because it doesn't matter what fuel it is, the lambda value is the same regardless of fuel.  if lambda for the mixture is greater then the 2.9 afr meth then i would say yes its possible in an EFI situation because efi has precise control throughout the range.  also, i think most pro mods all run 8 egts as its giving quicker readings then the egts.  some run both.  8egts with controller is big bucks, especially to read that low.

for DISCUSSION purposes only, safe on meth is 4.0 or .63 lambda and lets say (idk... ) safe for nitro is 1.0 afr nitro scale or .59 lambda.

for 30% nitro   70% (.7) meth, 30%(.3) nitro
(.7 x .63 safe meth) + ( .3 x .59 safe nitro) = .68 or 3.97 afr meth.

assuming a sensor can read that low, then its possible at that hp level.    we could create a scale for meth using max meth afr of 3.0 for 5k hp and use .63 for 1300 hp.  then lets say do the same for nitro based on 10k hp and ??? afr ratio to say same 1300 hp and what afr ration nitro it is.  then just put those into lambda, do calcs, then convert back to meth scale if need be.

the ntk sensor for meth will read down to 2.66 meth which is .42 lambda.  its just a matter of finding a controller that will read that low.  moran wants 600 bucks for one sensor.  assuming .68 is ok, thats 10.0 on gas and you cant run a standard bosch sensor (for long). so you need a ntk sensor.  if you  did all 8 thats 5k plus the controllers.. prob looking at 8-10k min.

as a swag, will it work or read id say yes to about 4k hp lets say if staying with 30% nitro.  but as Bruce alluded too in his post.. it would be so saturated it would be killed in no time. can it read, yes, is it possible i doubt it as the sensor would get killed.  as mentioned on EFI setup they can control precise fuel throughout and prob not kill the sensor. on meth, isnt the tuning window about 2k hp range?  if so, then super fat from idle to the target rpm tuning range window.

Nitro burns/combust as a liquid and is compression sensitive, I don't think that adding more O2 or lessoning it as a big effect as much as what blower boost adds to compressing it to make a bigger bang. My understanding is the only about 45% is used for making power and the rest is used during overlap for cooling. HP is heat/BTUs and its with those thermal indicators is where you will find your tune

this is interesting, i dont know anything about percentages burned.  but, looking at a sensor, they will ruin quickly if say saturated like this. you generally clean them with gasoline, if they are not too gone.   it might be a deal where the environment for the sensor on a mechanical setup is just too wet lets say where it would not even work anyways because of the saturation.

question is what you think the afr would be with the mixture your running.  meaning, in a pro mod their afr is like 3.2 on meth. at 50-60psi (guess) boost and making 2k-3k hp.   problem is getting a sensor AND a controller to read that low.  NTK makes laboratory grade sensors to do it then you have to find the controller.  not all will read that low.  if i recall correctly the standard bosch and ntk sensor will read down to like 4.5-4.7 afr meth. or say .7 lambda as a guess.  id have to dig out my notes to get more accurate.  i messed with this with my last car which was EFI.  i switched from gas to meth and did research, spoke to moran about it too.

so, need to figure out what the afr on meth adjusted for percentage of nitro is for the HP calc that your looking for and then find a sensor and controller to read that low.  my guess is, if trying to run 200mph which would be about 1400 hp guess on say 450 cube motor which is only 3hp/cube you would be looking at 3.7-4.0 afr meth;  thats just a swag.

I'm still undecided if i'm going. I was going to buy a spot @ midnight just in case, but i read that paragraph and went to bed lol

ah, go ahead and get a ticket.  one benefit out of this is you can now park with others if you choose whereas the old way the parking spots were set.  downside is you might be in the sand.   aside from what surface where on we are there for the experience, comradery, fun (hopefully), etc.

Id stay up till midnight October 1 and get tickets as first come first serve based on ticket sales.   I was/have been on first  or second row everythime.  To me the process seemed to work well.  I can see from the owners view point with the amount of time they spend every year getting everything lined out pitting wise prior to the meet.  but it seemed to work just fine.  It just makes it real challenging now to get your group together before pitting.  Also will probably see a lot of cones and caution tape saving spots unless they are going to have a pit nazi managing those actions.   Not everyone can show up on tuesday to get a spot.

Spud Miller's Cave / Re: fuel tank to fuel pump elevation

so today we took another stab at it.   Jeff talked to a person at Hilborn a bit and we think were headed in correct direction.  he said main spring between 2-5lbs, the idle (i guess secondary) at maybe 6 or so.  set bv at 50-60 and butterflys at 6k.  The guy also said the same thing that Spud told him on the phone before and that is before starting, open the hat and turn it over till fuel dribbles out the nozzle in the hat.  then go ahead and start.

long story short, were about 58% guessing (need to test as was getting late) on the bv and 8k on the butterflies which got us in the ball park of idle about 2100.  the egts are higher then we would like so we messed with the secondary and it wants to be guessing about 4-5lbs.

we need to get a better guage or something to test the lower psi numbers as we really dont know where its at becuase of the leak down tester i have.   the low numbers i think start at 4 lol so its a guess.

we will mess with it maybe Wednesday or Thursday again and try to fatten it up a bit.

interesting deal, i would of thought that the main would need to be bigger then the idle.  the way it sounds though, there is so much fuel flowing in the system it needs to be open soon to bypass it all.   the secondary gets us in the ballpark with the idle egts.  I wonder with it at 12lbs maybe it was too much fuel then at start guessing....    were bypassing more fuel now and its starting easier.  The other thing too were finding is needing to leave the bottle on it a little longer till it takes hold.

looking at the fuel psi, the bv psi is about 7-8lbs and the hat distribution is actually showing a little vaccum, about -.25lbs psi fuel.
