Thanks for the info guys, appreciate any info regarding practical info.  Looks like I need to slim down to fit into that FED anyway :) Kinda at 240 lbs right now.

Thanks for that info, helps a lot. I live in Poland - no dragsters here at all. I will be reading and asking you guys a lot here, for a year or 2 - until I finish my new house and finally have a decent garage to start FED project for real.  ;D

True, I will get to that, I was thinking more in a way of rear end cover selection, kinds of scatter shields etc

Front Engine Dragsters / Driver safety in FED

Hi guys, I have never driven a FED, sat in Altered few times that's it.  My previous experience was only with door slammers and pro-street.
So as I was sitting in altered dragster with my legs over the  rearend, I started to wonder. What options for driver security against explosion of transmission, shaft coupler or third member. Do you use some kind of special rear end cover, or any kind of scatter shield ?  A friend of mine had a kevlar cover over TH400 in his dragster. When the tranny exploded, parts flew all over the place, leaving huge hole in the door. Fortunately my friend got lucky and only got out with torn safety pants.
What options there are in order to minimise the risk in this day and age of safety equipment.

looked over all altered on racingjunk. Waiting for info on few, but other that 2 there is nothing for me right now :( they are either to expensive, to small for 240 lbs, no 4 link, not certed or just very old.  Any other places I can look for used altered ? Not that I'm in any hurry tho.

True true true. So got few questions

I know already that I should only look for stuff that is currently certified. and to look among last 10 years of production ?

How is your cage height and width  vs your arms width, how much space is enough space to get in and move around, but be small enough to provide good secure cage in case of crash. I'm 240lbs and 5.10. I know that i will be wearing thicker racing suit than in my door car. So that adds some inches already.

Well from my home to that track in Germany is around 1000 km. 95% of it is freeway so you can go smoothly. But there is a limit of 80 km/h with a trailer so its not as fast as you could without it.  The closes place I have is around 70 miles away, but they don't open it often for dragracing.

So one way is to buy used rolling. What about chassis builders ? Who you guys can recommend when it comes to altered. Just want to check it all before I commit.  And where can i check some bodykit options for that.

I'm 240 lbs - its hard to get a decent suit in Europe for my size. And we don't have any 2 piece suits, so got 1 PC. 2PC must be more comfy for sure. You take the jacket off and just walk around, without a dead carcass tied to your waist with 1PC ;)

But its not like it's totally deserted on dragracing scene. We got some good places quite close

Like http://www.nitrolympx.de/

or Santa Pod in GB http://www.santapod.co.uk/

Those are 2 places for serious racing

Drag racing scene in Poland is very small.  We are just starting to see some shy attempts from sponsors.  All of the top 10 cars in Poland are AWD.  Best time in Poland is 7.796 @ 178 MPH, and it is by 1600 HP Vette with GMC Typhoon AWD. We don't have such deep rules as you do. And we have some crazy projects because of that. For example there is a car that has 2 engines - one for each axle.  It's sort of a wild west out here compared to your rules and regulations ;)  But its starting to be more and more professional. Teams are traveling all over Europe to compete. Things are going in a good direction. I would love to see a real pro drag track in Poland, that is prepped as it should be.

If you are interested you can see the top100 of polish teams here - http://www.dragracelist.pl/topofthetops/absolute-top100/

Ahhh good to know. Not sure what the final construction will be - I'm leaning toward Bantam body. Something like this.

Will it be fully covered - no idea. I still need to incorporate some kind of engine radiator into the build since I will be running on 93 octane for a while. I might angle it a bit,  don't want to put a huge block strait for esthetic reasons ( might be forced to - not sure).
What I am sure that I need a lot more downforce than you guys in order to have a decent 60ft.

Our tracks are not prepped, just cleaned. I had huge problems with not spinning the tires in 3400 lbs camaro. With manual Lenco I had to do launches at around 3500-3600 RPM. If I did more I was spinning for like 1/8th like crazy.

Yea, you guys are right - I can't gather a team of 4-5 ppl that will always accompany me to the track. I got 1 maybe 2 guys tops. So body is not a good idea.  Altered is the way to go.

What do you mean by the "BIG OVERHANG" in the front ? You have to excuse me sometimes - English is my 2nd language.

Guys - can you put Vintage funnycar body on altered frame ? Was just thinking about some options in the future. They look wicked. DO you need a specific wheelbase for that ?

Good hint dreracercar :)  - check cert - got it.

Roo - those are great. Thanks a lot. I will pinpoint  exactly what I want thanks to those links. Unfortunately I will be buying something early spring, not sooner. And for sure will take you up on the help you offered. It is hard to buy blind.  I just can't wait till I finally get the base for it and start to mingle with engine mounting etc.
