I built the double hoop style for my first try, and as I look back now I felt it was more forgiving for getting the seat angle and shoulder hoop height set up and adjusted. I would look through all the chassis posts here, and let us know how it progresses!

Great question! I built my car with the upper and lower hoop, and I've wondered the same thing. I can tell one thing, getting the seat just right for the intended driver was the most difficult part of the build for me, maybe the two styles have an effect on that. Hopefully someone with experience in both will comment here.

I run one of these prior to the barrel valve and check it every other pass

Are you running a -8 then? Does it effect your tune up in any way?

When one person moves on for whatever reasons, it may be a loss, but it is also an opportunity for others to step up with their own knowledge and experience.  Here.

Thanks, but the ones from Hotheads are the other style, I'm still holding out hope that someone will sell a set to go to a very good cause.

I was at the Nitro Revival as well, the car I'm re-creating is best know for being in all of the 4-car "California Fuel Altered" tours that were promoted across the U.S. in '68,'70, and '71. The "Magnificent 7", the well known "Winged Express, and "Pure Heaven" were in all 3, and a rotation of cars filled the 4th spot, including "Mondello-Matsubaru", "Beaver Hunter", "Bradford's", and"Rat Trap".  According to an extensive story by Chris Martin published in the 7/5/85 National Dragster, the Mag 7 fueler won the majority of the match-ups. All of the other cars exist today in either restored original form or an active modern version, this is the missing AA/FA of the group, until now.

It will be a cacklefest car, but I have been using tube diameters and wall thickness that are in line with SFI spec, but no double hoop cage. Some cackle cars have been allowed to do a burnout. My goal is to have it look like it could be driven right in to the photograph.

This has been posted elsewhere, but since I'm a member here, I thought I would share it. I do fabrication for a living, it's one of the projects I've been building for a customer.

MAGNIFICENT 7 AA/FUEL ALTERED TO BE RE-CREATED

The 1968 vintage S & R race cars built - Hawkins and Chadderton "Magnificent 7" fuel altered - is currently being re-created in Southern California in Leroy Chadderton's hometown of Redlands Ca. Skip Davis of Precision Marine, also in Redlands, is the owner/financier, engine builder, and machinist. Bill Gathings of Yucaipa Ca is doing the chassis and running gear fabrication to a precise scale of the famous original. Original owner Al Hawkins has given his blessing on the re-creation, and is providing technical advice and many unpublished photos from his collection. Surviving members among original crewmen Chuck Ogawa, Tom Scull, Steve Sheraton, alternate drivers Tom Ferraro, Mike Sullivan and Dan Geiger are being consulted for details as well. Chadderton raced the legendary Magnificent 7 on all three "California Fuel Altered" tours promoted across the U.S. with the well known "Winged Express", "Pure Heaven", and a rotation of cars filling the 4th spot. Look for updates as this project nears completion.

I like it here, there is a lot of respect for most every opinion, there are a lot of different ways to get a car down the track, get it done and even win occasionally, and that diversity makes it that much more interesting. I was on the other site too, It got to where I didn't want to post at all.

Roo Man's Room / Re: Welding Moly Tube?
« on: June 14, 2017, 09:28:42 PM »
Welding the the tubes at a decent warm temperature is a must to help minimize distortion, and cleaning is a must as well like described above, I clean out the inside right after I notch a tube in case I forget. Following an air frame type sequence, welding from tack to tack, with at least 4 tacks minimum on a small tube, slowly heating up and cooling with the tig torch, and not letting to much heat build in any one area all seems to help minimize distortion. Some other tips are: Always grind the tapered end of a angle cut or notch to have the full thickness of the tube exposed to the seam; I don't try to do teeny little "barely there" welds, do a full weld and go slow; on a sharp inside corner like a diagonal, use a a gas lens so you can extend the tungsten as needed closer to the seam; when you get toward finishing all the endless welding, mark any last spots you see, they will be easier to find the next day. ER- 80 and ER- 70 S2 welding rods are commonly recommended for 4130cm, I like the 70 S2 rod.
