okay right or wrong I have a Powerglide with ultra bell with a stock center and tailshaft. If I am reading the rules correctly I need either a shield or a blanket to go around the main body/planetary. Correct? so I bought a blanket based on packaging. so I assume the straps go across the bottom but won't I have to be careful with it going over the shifter mechanism and holding heat in the trans? Any pictures of one properly installed. Thanks Davin

Get your money back, PG's leak and the blankets soak up with fluid and dirt ---its a real mess!!
-
Trans Blanket only good for 2 yr cert , shield good for 5 and blanket will contain the heat
-
Yes buy a shield!

Trans shield is a nice easy set up.

I went with blanket because I don't think there is enough room for the big plate shield. here are a couple pics the issue is the steering cross mount is real close maybe 1/2"
Please ignore the thin flexplate only shield as this is an old photo and it is now an ultra bell.

Raise the steering or go with a REID or JW case
-
do you know what the height addition with the shield?
-
You'll find the blanket follows the same profile as the shield when pulled tight, so theres very little to be gained clearance wise. I had a Reid case in my altered because the shield fouled the area where the pedals wanted to sit. The inner liner in the Reid case is a very nice solution but obviously costs more. In my slightshot, I'm using a shield again but raising my pedals up.
The whole topic of SFI certs for this stuff infuriates me. The TCI flexplate shields are so thin it's unreal and I don't understand why an aluminium trans shield needs to be re-certified. I could fabricate far better shields myself, in fact the UK MSA rules mandate SFI for engines where they are produced but allow self construction for engine where SFI stuff isn't. I'd feel a lot safe fabricating my own.

Just make a new steering box mount, cross shaft. Put a couple of inches of arc into the new bar. You should be able reuse your steering box mount . I did it nd it worked great. The center of the cross bar is raised up 3 inches or so.

were you able to maintain the same shaft exit out the side panel?

Just tilt the box a little so that you don't have to mess with the bodywork. A lot of the period cars had the box tilted so that the shaft exited low--it made it easier to get the drag link under the headers--especially with a hemi.

Cardboard is cheap ;D

I would just put a bag on it. I had similar issues only it was the accelerator pedal that got in the way. I went with a bag, went a lot of rounds with no issues. Granted it's not ideal but it will work fine. And if you manage to break the case with the planetary you will probably wear less oil.

LOL guess you are right on the cardboard.

thanks for the thought on tilting. I will give that a look. I am going to get a tci shield to compare fit with the blanket and get that knocked out over the weekend. thanks

so I picked up a new TCI shield. looks nice all red and such. I have the shield bolted to the trans at the servo. out of the box only one of the 3 brackets fit with out rebending. As for the pan bracket it is a no way with out adding and subtracting material. First issue is the second set of holes for a deep pan are not "long" enough to fit my TCI deep pan (go figure), second it has a hard interference with the shift cable bracket (also TCI). Sure seems they would have installed at least one of these things as a completed trans and not just a component by component basis. Any rate question is can I modify the pan bracket, I know I can not touch the top piece with the expense sticker.

Call TCI and ask about the lower strap and complain about the cable problem
-
according to TCI "modify the bottom loop to fit the application"
-
Look at the CSR trans shields. I've used them in tight fit applications with great success. they can be re-certified as well.
