Title: First Pass in my Worm Car
Post by: dusterdave173 on August 08, 2014, 09:50:20 AM
Well..as you know I have been working on my Cenpen for over 2 years so finally last night we made it to the track--Test night. Waited in stage lanes over an hour while track electric issues were solved and tree was working--
Looked back in the pits and there were near 150 cars so we decided we may only get this one run--
I let her rip--very first pass--No testing in drive way, pits or anywhere--went from shop to trailer to staging--Prayed  and.........
5.68 120 MPH  1.24 60 ft
Yahooo!!!
It was WAY wilder than I ever imagined!
She went right down Broadway straight as a shot--I was way late on my shift but other than that a killer pass.
Boys with projects..Keep working--there is nothing like it anywhere!

That's awesome, Dave.  I got my first pass in the FED  this week, (not as fast as your's!) and I feel the same way!  there is nothing like it!

Congrats to you! I had all these plans do a 60 ft or two but the burnout went smooth and when I left it was straight and not making any moves except hauling--was over before I could decide anything--smooth as silk--I got very lucky.
Can't wait for more!!!!!!

Hey Duster Dave,
Did you have a chance to weigh the car?

Congrats! You're right. Nothing like it. I remember the first time I went to the track with the Sr Dragster . A lot of IFs on my mind. The Starter guy and his pals did everything to prevent me from running (don't like six cyl cars) but the track manager stepped in and spoke over the radio which I could plainly hear even sitting in the car. he said" Quit "fooling" around and LET THAT CAR RUN RIGHT NOW" That was the end of the nonsense. The car was totally untried with 6 snowmobile carbs for induction on a homebrew intake. I staged, Turned her loose and held on. It worked perfectly. I went back to the pits, sat with my friends and talked for awhile then loaded up and went home. One asked me why I was leaving. I explained I had built the car from zip, and the engine was totally experimental idea plus the 6 snowmobile carbs. I had pulled to the line , it didn't bark, fart or stutter and ran straight and true. I explained I wouldn't mess up a night like that for anything. I went home and sat on the couch reliving the moment till about 2 Am. I think I was still grinning when I woke up.
I am sure your feelings were similar.  Again congrats!

Well since you did not hit any walls I'm guessing the steering arm help up.  So where did you run it at? Hope I can make simular post sometime soon.

Yea that steering arm was a good one :) Thanks!!
Have not weighed it yet
I did think of you--one good run so don't mess it up--I came home with great first try

I am hoping that with a few more evenings on it work on leave rpm, tire pressure, nose weight, etc timing, A/F that it will pick up some though...if that is as fast as it ever goes I will be happy!!

I trusted my tape measure and just went for it.

I have been lucky with the engine--it is my first injected build. I have yet to milk the oil, she runs cool and just seemed "Happy"  I thought at first my cam was too small so I did not advance it any--when that rascal got in high gear--WOW! It was gettin it!

Waiting on cooler weather, that SFI 15 suit is a good weight loss program in itself!

You will always want to go faster after a couple of runs.

Dave that is GREAT.  I can see the look on your face even.   I ran my Worm car at Route 66 lost 9.0 index in the Semi Finals.  Ran 9.03 to 9.08 all day.  Sure wish John would have designed a better Driver as this one hit terrible lights.   ;)
