Hey all:
Well its cold here in the NE. No heat in the Barn so to satiate the appetite its my time to dig through the old magazine boxes .
This particular issue (Drag Racing - Feb 67). Is a real great one. It was also timely after reading the HR story on Don Long last month. Beautiful car of Art Malone (Woody).  Love reading these to get back in that frame of mind at time. They really get in great detail on this car.
Roo. Do you think that the Steering Bellcrank is off set to right in regards to there being Ackermann in the steering arms?

 well Sorry first time posting photos to this site. ..... my scans came out good but having to trim the photo down to less then 375 KB  for uploading makes it so you cant blow them up much.  :(
I will look into a photo bucket or something. But if you want email me and I will send you the full size scans.

What were your settings when you did the scan?

You should be able to get a very clear document, if you send me the full size versions, and let me play I might be able to get a clear presentation. Possibly I would have to scan the original.

Howdy Glenn:
My scans came out fine. This little cheapie Brother scanner I have has kind of amazed me with its quality. I resized the pics with my on board Microsoft resizing ( Microsoft Live Gallery) Have used this same procedure with other web sites. No issues. Now I am a computer looser, so am most likely doing something wrong.  :o

If you want I can E you the original scans. But you need to be working on your car.  ;)
  Only 8 weeks till FTNP.
I will give you other thoughts on this in Emails so as not to bore people.

I was told Woody Gilmore  used propane bottles for the housing. I want to make one for my woody.

Only have pieces at the moment, the transmission is back from re certification and rebuild, new tires are sitting in the garage, aluminum pistons and rods are ordered, head gaskets ordered, but not here. Engine should be on Matt's dyno after gatornationals

LZ, you asked a question about bellcrank offset. You addressed it to Roo, and I don't presume myself to be his equal, or even worthy to sweep his shop floor. But I do have an opinion. I don't think the offset can have anything to do with Akerman, given that you could offset the bellcrank the other way, to the left, necessitating only a longer steering link to keep the bellcrank geometry right so you have equal steering amounts and rates right-to-left. So the right-offset bellcrank allows a shorter steering link to the spindle arms, extremely slightly lighter and extremely slightly more rigid. The biggest effect I can see is that it puts the drag link tucked in really nice and tight to the nose. And maybe keeps a two-piece drag link straighter at the joint for more of the travel. Not much performance reason, but it LOOKS cleaner tight to the nose. But the front drag link could hit the bodywork at the extremes of travel if it were offset too far right.
 Or maybe I'm entirely off base. It would be good to see others' comments on your question. If I learned something from that, it wouldn't be the first time...

I agree with you John, it makes sense to me.

As for sweeping FED shop floors, I'd be honored to do it. Could I keep bits, pieces and scraps of cro-mo, titanium and molybdenum that I find around? :-)

                         ackerman is strictly a function of the location of the attachment point of the steering linkages to the steering arms relative to the king pin, track and wheelbase. Ideally the point should be on a line drawn between the king pin and the center of the rear axle. The location of the bell crank has no effect as noted by John. What is interesting is that the geometry as shown in the photo minimizes bump steer and eliminates toe change by running a relatively long link from the bell crank to the right steering arm and then connecting that arm to the left on with a straight link. The link from the bellcrank to the spindle will swing in a slight arc and thus there will be some steering effect as the axle moves on the torsion bar but at least the wheels will stay parallel with each other.  For that reason having the bellcrank offset to the left is a good idea as it makes the swinging link longer.
