Here's some shots of a front axle i spent a couple of minutes putting together for a customer's 183" car i built late last year,i have a shop here in enzed building mainly doorslammers & the occassional hot rod,and this car is my 1st step into the 'dark side',(starting on a 195"example next month),i did a bit of research before starting & liked the look of the Fighting Irish batwings, spent a couple of days making some simple press tools and jigs & bingo finished product, will post up more pics in next few days on the 183" build, (quite exciting):)

I turned the pictures around for you, start a thread on the build in the build category, use it to send to your customers for future business.

All done! Just have to take it off the trailer put the coolant back in (drained for winter) and adjust idle  then test drivability (No bog when floored)
Linkage presented a few challenges but that is all sorted out now and working. WUGA was by for spring chat. Talking of doing a 261GMC powered  32 bantam sedan.
Hope he does.

Just got the keys to the new shop today. We moved to the east coast on the water in Florida about a month ago and we are loving it. The track is about 30 miles away and then there are about 15 more tracks in the same time it would take us to get to Bakersfield. We have two of five cars here that will go in the shop this week.
We should be at the track by the end of May.
Glad to see everyone still getting things done on their cars.
We will finally be working on the Supercat by the end of this week ;D

Terry, Nice front axle. Design is very similar to the Sr Dragster from a design point. . If it steers as well as mine does you will be smiling for sure.

Nice work Bruce, I have a question for you ?  I'm forming an folded lip / edge on the cowl over the motor plate. the material has been anneald and is workable.  I beat the lip over the m;plate with a wooden mallet with the cowl dzus'd in place to hold it's shape .  The rounded bends pucker up and need to be shrunk down, however if I do this with the shrinker off the car, the cowl goes out of shape and the dzus holes no longer line up ?  How can I lose the material in the bend without distorting the panel ?

Couple of things

what grade material and how thick?
how much flange 1/4-1/2-1" ??

to start with trying to beat a flange 90* over a 1/4" thick motorplate will cause the motorplate to flex, thus when you relax the cowel by removing the fasteners, the motorplate springs back and re-installing the cowel will have the dzus holes out of possision. Always start the lip by just tapping down a little to mark the alu and finnish up with hammer and dolly to acheave 90*.
The material for this should be 3003 H14 x .050 and you anneal by carbon soot and burn off, ther are plently of other methods to do the same thing, this is what I do.
This aluminum has the properties to shrink into itself so any waves in the edges will compress as you mallet into a heal dolly and once edge is flat you can use the shrinker to tune the radious--just be smart and lite about it.
If the material you are using is thicker and you are running a large flange--you have to almost double the effort , also if the radious of the bend is too tight you have to reduce the flange width overall and/or weld in material.
If the material is 5052 H32--- that material is not heat treatable with normal methods and really stiff, so any forming should be done with machines designed to that function
