Vintage style FEd hauler
« on: May 21, 2013, 05:15:17 AM »
While I have enjoyed haulin my FED in my V10 Ram pickup bed I have a 426 Max Wedge I drive on the street. I decided since my racing is local (within 20 miles of home) to build a matching trailer for the 63 wedge car and go to the track in style. Now I realize it will be good for cruise night displays as well. Yesterday Linda (aka Mrs D) and I pushed the rail on the trailer for the first time.  I am happy with the look so far.
Must be lots of others with neat haulers. How about some pics.

one of my tow options is my 1969 Chevy Panel truck. It already had 454 just need to get good auto trans hopefully with overdrive. I inherited it from my grandfather. I grewup taking summer vaction trips with grandparent is it. I remember looking over his shoulder while we where headed to Disney worl with a 43 foot camper and seeing the speedometer on 110. Yea the need for speed is multi generational in family.

I have 24' conversion on FL-70 chassis that I will use for long hauls. But for more local races I'll use the panel.Besides a decked out 1969 panel truck towing a Front engine dragster just looks right at home.

C10 might be a light light duty, but I guess you could beef up the springs.

Really nice looking panel.

Only used for light weight deal not fully loaded trailer. Like I said Ive been in it with 32' full size camping trailer behind it going NC to florida and it was 100 plus for alot of the trip. Add the extra controll bars, havinf brains fart for exact name of them/Load equalizers i think it is. Plus I have ultra light trailer for close races 26' , ok let me say I have lead on it working on deal with guy. Might be able to make it work full time, but when I race it looks like pro deal with all the spare parts. My theory if you have one engine it will break if you have two lot less chance of breaking one.

Very cool pics.
Figured out my fenders today. Bought a single fender and split it lengwise. . Law here says "A fender or some method of preventing water from spraying on the car behind must be employed."  This will fill the bill nicely.  Hopefully they will be on by tomorrrow night. Already schnuk out for a road test.  Tows good.
Don
Finshed it today. Need to do a bit to the hitch but I am good to go as is. Put 20 Mi on it to see how it works.

Sidewinder

That looks like a caravan based trailer similar to what I'm planning to use.

Do you have any more pics of it

Well my 69 panel now needs new trans seems the 3 spd broke today. Can not figure out what happened it was doing so well first 4 or 5 burnouts. I have new one anyway and just felt like playing some. Guess its time for the automatic install.
I should have remembered that those old 3 spds wouldn't take a lot I put 14 in a 66 pickup in less than year, back when I was younger and couldn't behave.Somethings never change.

Thabnks but its 20' paint and repair job that a a-hole did and took advantage of grandfathers age and bad eyesite. It needs total frame off restro. I have some parts, but not starting till I have everything to do chassis and body work. The engine, transmission swap and interrior are easy and cheap compared.

Lil brother owning body shop and doing great work on restrorations not bad.Throw in the lil guuilt trip about how truck was Pa's pride and joy helps some too.
Engine wise I have stroker crank, rods, pistons and heads waiting.Cam,lifters and intake are next on order list for it.Nobody says it can't have little extra torque and 42 extra cubes will do that. Than I have to decide on trans .Really want overdrive, just don't want a computer to have to be hooked to it.

Funny thing  grandfather bought it new in 69.Painted out of it all year then entered carshow as custom van and won most years. Then went back to painting. Sold truck in 1978,got 10k out of it.Found it in 1995 bought it back for 2200 and obviously the guy never  took care of truck. I rebuilt engine(maybe 750 miles since) and had idiot do body work and paint it. Some one needs to tell him 80 grit is not final sanding and you replace rusted lower quarters not put piece of metal over it and paint it.

I figure in about 14k it will top notch show ,go and tow. Going to make it look more like something my granfather would be proud of.By the way you have never seen a guy more picking about his vehicles than he was.
