Water or Not?
« on: May 19, 2013, 08:03:02 AM »
I am not sure if I should run water in my 455 old twin (not that being a twin makes any difference to the question) I had planed on using a very small hidden rad and fan with a electric pump but I see some feds on with small tanks and no pump and others with no water at all, which is the best way for me to go?, I am sort of thinking that as I am running on gasoline that small tanks would act as a heat soak for a slightly longer running time, is that correct?, your thoughts please Moon

If you are running gasoline, you better run the radiator and fan.

I vote water and pump. Makes for a lot of work to get it right, but once you have it you can almost hot lap it.

Im for the simpler deal, but only if running alky. On gas I think its not even a question a cooling system is a must.

I have been running injection for long time and know how to work it to controll temp pretty well. While few disagree all I can say is I have done it a more than one car and it works. You do need few extra components and good understanding of FI system.

I run alky injected. also run water just in the block. there was an interesting piece on SWJF site from Jon Hansen on running water and he said they got more horsepower with water on same engine at same time with water than without. I like it for the heat distribution aspects. I built a small  header/expansion tank with cap on mine. I do have to put some heat into it though before a pass if I want a quicker ET., alky loves the heat.
