DAS AUTO Gasser
Dolmetsch:
Over the weekend I received Free a VW bug body. I have lots of spare slant six engines trans & parts and decided to whip up a gasser chassis. 4 corner 1/4 eliptics with ladder bars. What to call it? For me there is no question. "DAS AUTO mit Kreizler Kraft" Always wanted a gassser coupe.

Over the last two days I have been working also on the gasser chassis. Why no pics? Because the metal was given to me free but it is a bit scuzy looking. Cleans up good with a quick pass with a flap wheel but tis not pretty as received so I will picture the frame when it is finsihed welding and I have had a chance to remove the old scuzy painted surface. It is excellant metal. 2X3 X .180"+ Even a bit stronger then required. So far I have built the lower frame and front crossmember. The frame style is a Honda H . Tapered from front to rear with wideness at rear. Dimensions are arrived at by using the MT VW Bug body shell and laying it out on the garage floor to make sure it would all work out. Today I made the kick ups for over the ladder bars and springs. Then do not taper like the frame in front of them but go back square. Rear will be 30 inch ladder bars with an unnarrowed Jeep rear end. Front end will be quarter eliphtics with a homebrew tube axle . I am still looking for spindles that will hold a modern set of brakes . Cant make the king pin bosses in the lathe till I know the length and bore size. I E Handi van or Dodge A100 or early Econoline. I prefer building axles with Handi Van spindles. Whatever shows up available for the right price. (FREE") will get the nod if it is suitable. In fact you should know so far my cost has been $0. I have a/6 engine , trans core, body and all frame steel free. The straight tube axle tube is a piece I had left over from a Jeep Altered build a few years ago. I needed 35 inches in length and it turned out to be 36". It is 2 inch heavy wall round tubing I have used before.
Anyway as soon as the basic frame is finish welded up and buffed I will picture it.
