Who builds own engine
« on: January 17, 2023, 09:28:33 AM »
I have noticed that majority of racres seem to buy engine instead of build themselves. Now nothing wrong with that and my be better in log run.

I know when I started racing in 1985 there was two or three guys who bought enignes and the rest built or had abuddy who did. Now days it seems almost the exact oppisite. For me if not for building engine and most of time the whole car I would not have much interest in racing. I actually enjoy building and tuning more than driving. driver is just there to prove tune up works and engine makes power. LOL With that said I was told long time ago by Alan Satrr never put brains, talent and money in one spot. I have obey that few times but broken more.

Wondering since mostly older racers here. How many build your own engine, trans, rear ends ,chassis and or combo of?
Relecting obama is like shooting right foot because it did not hurt enough when you shot left foot

I do my own engines. All of the assembly work and some of the machine work. I borrow time on a flow bench for my heads .

I farm out my block machining.
I farm out my crankshaft machining.
I farm out my torque converter builds.
I farm out my transmission builds.
Other than that I build my motors. When you are racing a crossflow headed inline six cylinder there is very little you can get by opening a racing catalog.

i use to build alot more motors for myself and others everything from flathead harley's to blown big block chevies and hemi's had the machine work farmed out, I've slowed down now and just do street stuff, and do transmissions, diff's built cars from rollers to turn key, one winter built 5 cars 3 rollers and 2 turn key. now I'm working on a 371 olds with 6 carbs and a 350 with 2x4 intake for street rods at 75 i'm taking it easy.
