Fuel tank, leaks

(1/1)

tcoupekyle:
So I been having a leak in my fuel tank. I thought it was just from the breather at first but appears to be seeping from a weld. Should I have the tank welded? Or is there a magic chemical solution now?
I polished said tank today too.

THE FRENCHTOWN FLYER:
Welding on a used gas tank can be problematic. Flammable fumes can linger.
At Ford R&E the techs would steam clean a tank before welding on it. Often sensors and fittings needed to be added.
I would also recommend a back shielding gas be piped into the tank during the welding process.

tcoupekyle:
For sure on that. I've had to weld some motorcycle tanks before with an argon Purge. But I don't weld aluminum and was really hoping there was an epoxy or something that would hold up.

Tip I learned on welding tanks, mainly gas tanks on Harleys. Wash them out good.Fill them half full and roll the over where you are not welding. Done this half dozen times and never issue. I have welded on block and had fumes in oil blow a brand new mag. valve cover off in pieces.  For a quick fix I carry a epoxy tank repair that is two part epoxy almost clay like. You mash them totehr and apply to tanl.Has always worked even when tank was dripping when applied. Can not remember name I get it at most any parts store. It is black and gray in roll about 3/4" and mayb e 2 -1/2 long. Only 8 or 10 bucks and worth a try.
