Setting up Hilborn Stack Fuel Injection System
« on: April 20, 2021, 10:21:17 PM »
Hi, I am trying to get info on Hilborn Stack Injection on a SBC with methanol. The barrel valve I have doesn't have a idle circuit bypass on it, Hilborn said that I did not need one. Will this system idle without the bypass? I would also like to know what to set my main bypass at and what pill. Thank you.

I have seen this same type of question so many times. The key to your injector set-up is your pump. Nozzle & jet size is all dependant on the pump output. Send the pump to Spud or Hilborn and have it flowed. Then they will ask about your engine, fuel etc. Only then will they have enough info to tell you how to set it up. Send as much of the system as you can. They can check for damage, worn out parts, leaking O-rings, etc. They can also provide instructions how to plumb the system, leak test the barrel valve and service after you get home from the race. Spud has a great tune-up calculator on his website once you have enough info to answer all the questions. Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. I would send the system in but Hilborn and FIE won't return messages or emails. What I am wondering is why I don't have a secondary idle circuit. When I talked to Hilborn when buying the parts he said that I don't need a secondary poppet and I always thought I did but that was on nitro. I guess with methanol I wont be burning as much fuel vs nitro.

I use a secondary only to bring the engine back to idle rpm after a burnout. When you let out of it after the burnout the rpm is hi so the pump speed is hi so fuel output is hi so rpm stays hi and takes a lot longer to come down to idle so you can put it in reverse to idle back to the line to stage. Secondary dumps that extra fuel to prevent that situation. I run a Hilborn and idle is controlled by throttle plate air gap, barrel valve placement and the primary return spring tension for idle fuel pressure.

Thanks for giving me the scoop on why I need a secondary idle crcuit to bleed the excess pressure after burn out. All the fuel injection systems I have dealt with have always had a secondary. I will have to get a spool with a hole in it, the one Hilborn sent me does not. Do you have a starting tune up that I can use? Hilborn promised me one if I bought their parts, turns out they won't return emails since Holley bought them. I wanted to see today how long I could stay on hold ---> 1-1/2 hours with no signs of anyone answering. I am building a blower motor and there is more info on the net about it than this stack injection system.

Tuneup will depend on pump flow, nozzle size, engine cubic inches , etc. Call Spud and try extension 101. He has never not called me back. He does get busy, not sure if his staffing is back to max yet. He is very good and won’t sell you anything you don’t need.

Oh yes, my tuneup won’t help, it’s for a BBC with nitro

Hilborn was purchased by Holley. Call them.

Thanks fellows for the responses. I am almost done with the roller. I got a starter tune up off of Alkydigger website. I know where to go from there. Thanks again.
