6AL Enough?
« on: June 01, 2018, 07:39:08 PM »
So it's time for me to buy the ignition system. I'm thinking of using a MSD85551 locked out and a 6AL box. All I will need is the rev limiter. I'll be using a carb on gas for a few runs (no cooling system). Then I want to switch to my Hilborn stack setup on methanol. What are the thoughts of using the 6AL with methanol? Will it be enough?

I believe it will have enough power for alcohol.

Lil brother ran BBC with alky injection and 6al no issue's. IMO if buying new always buy more than needed now to allow for future upgrades power wise. Then I am one of those never satisfied with power level and want more, more and more.

A 6-AL will do you fine.

This may be a reach, but you say your home track is  Alamo City Motorplex. If I remember a previous conversation I had with an old fiend Joey Lapelle (who was the technical director of MSD), well I understand he is now working at that track. You would be wise to look him up.

Last time I saw him he was out here for the Winternationals with a guy running in Top Dragster by the name of Lyle Bynum.

The track changed ownership this month. Formally San Antonio Raceway is now Alamo City Motorplex. I know the people who manage the track. I'll have to check with them on Joey. We're still not sure who the new owners are.(rumor mill running wild :)) Supposed to be major upgrades to the track.

I just bought a 6AL and a 85551. Not sure which coil I want to use yet. Either the epoxy filled 8207 or the old canister oil type 8202.

Joey (early to mid-40s now) was severely crippled in a car crash when he was younger and walks with the use of a cane or rides a scooter.

He is a very fine man who knows his stuff.

If you do find him, tell the the guys at Valley Head Service said "hi."

Lyle Bynum appears to be from the El Paso area. I'll do some checking and see if I can locate Joey. I'll relay your message to him and let you know.
