Strut suspensions

Howdy.
I've seen 33 Willies coupes with strut front suspensions. When did Struts first appear in race cars?

strut frt suspension has been used at least from the early 70's mostly Datsun/Nissan

Can anyone be more specific as I'm from the great white north and  the answer was given from memory . Who was the first to use struts in drag racing?

I asked because I was interested in buying a car here (Australia) that was home built in around 1974 and remains essentially unchanged which has had strut suspension since day one.
