I would have never thought it either. In the past I have even fired a couple of engines with just open exhaust ports and they ran fine, but not this one....lol

Hey guys,
Got to reading this and thought of my deal with my shorter fender headers I just built. I also squeezed different head gaskets on it and I couldn't get my BBC to idle either. Found out that my engine needed more timing since I didn't work my domes like the last set for better flame prop.... soon as I added more timing it took off and idled just fine...with shorter headers and matching ports at the heads, my engine never sounded better!
. Just thought I'd throw that out there...
