Seat Belt Help
« on: December 31, 2016, 07:00:22 AM »
OK..so I ran with a belt set from Impact racing--got one with adjuster on RH side only thought that would be easy in the dragster--NOT  I got a pull down normal style and well..you just could not get in there to pull it hard enough
So..Ordered a pull up style like everyone said--That dang thing ain't much better as it starts to pull the lap belt tight then even with crew pulling--it always seems to get in a bind and bunch up in the tensioner sort of locking it up--it is all about the angle maybe? VERY frustrating   This week I have sat in the car and worked this deal every which way I can think of    Lap belt is at good correct angle but I can't make it where I am happy--can get it tight enough and feel safe so????
What to do???
Should I get a set with pull up adjustment on Both sides?? That looks like best option so far
I can almost get it tight enough like it is but not as tight as I want it
Also considering going cam lock this time
Thoughts??
Thanks

I am real happy with belts from Autopower Industries (Rick White) in San Diego. The lap belts pull up and uses a cam lock

With dragsters someone needs to load you in the car period!!! Adjusters should be on both sides. It also helps if the person belting you in feeds the belt in as they are pulling up

Bruce is right on with a crew person strapping the driver in.....   Only way to go.

I went to Taylor Motorsports  7 point harness with cam lock........two years ago.    Works really well...   you may have to add anchors for the belts that go around your thighs... ( you actually sit on those belts)  The lap belts are pull up...( I made up an  S shaped .5  dia. tube tool to pull the lap belt tight the first time that adjustment stayed. No need to redo)

The 7 point system works way better for the parachute hits.....

The belts are nomex covered and all wrap tubing with special belt threading through metal plate buckles.  No bolt on steel anchors.

Dennis Taylor was very helpful and they can be re-certified.

As Bruce said get crew to help someone you or crew can feed belt through the adjuster push on the belt  at adjuster to feed it through.
Usually I get the guy on opposite side to pull while  I feed it we even use a tie down strap through the loop to help them pull the belt tight
this for the lap belts only. My Dragster tires are in the way so the tie down strap makes it easier.
In the FA I feed and tighten at the same time for Driver is larger and his arms are in the way  ::)! right Mike? I also use the opposite side rule as I can get much tighter this way.

I built a U shape pull up tool for my guys like mentioned previously. RED, but very necessary for a crew guy. pull up lap belts for sure.

Bought my second set of pull-up belts with cam lock from Racer Direct, awesome company to deal with, no tools necessary to cinch me in, although I agree with a crew member to assist. and they are recertifiable. so happy I bought a set for the wifes car
its all smoke and mirrors

Let me Report
If you use a latch style instead of a Cam lock in a dragster you are crazy--This is what I have learned--OK when I was building my car budget said cheap belts---for all this time I have STRUGGLED to do that latch
I installed new cam lock set  with both side pull up and WOW!!! How sweet it is!!!
I will NEVER use a latch style again   Whew!! You can belt yourself in like a Breeze
Yahoooo
