Milling OEM 351C Heads
(1/1)
coupemerc:
A question for you Ford guys...what would you recommend as a maximum (but safe) amount that a stock cast iron 351C 4V head could be milled to reduce the chamber volume? This would be for drag race only use. Thanks
Frontenginedragsters:
Funny you should ask.
I built several 351 Cleveland engines back in the late 1980's.
I assume your talking about 4 barrel closed chamber heads?
We used to angle mill them .125" to zero.
Lots of machine work but a good way to get compression with a flat top piston.
You first have to look at piston to valve clearance to see how much you have.
You can not "un mill" them.

coupemerc:
Thank you Matt. Yes, they would be 4V closed chamber. I'm assuming the .125" number is on the exhaust side of the head. I can see some advantages of doing that. Would the casting get too weak for a max effort head with that much material being removed? Do you know what a maximum but safe number would be for straight milling?
Frontenginedragsters:
I would like to know more about your Max effort.
Matt
