What are you guys using for open face helmets when wearing a fire mask?

WhiskeyRebel:
So I may be aquiring a new simpson fire mask.
Been looking for a decent open face but cant really find anything.
I only plan on running the mask at our local Old time drags once a year seeing as most tracks around here dont allow them.
I am only running basement 10's but can't remember if the helmet needs to be snell approved for IHRA.

Any info or help would be appreciated.

WhiskeyRebel:
I've found lots of DOT helmets, but can't remember if thats allowed.

dreracecar:
Problem with new helmets are the extended cheek guards get in the way of the filters and that you have to sand/grind the interior foam at the forehead for the thick padding of the mask itself. If you dont grind that area the helmet sticks up off you head and the chin strap becomes too short rendering the helmet useless in a crash at any speed.
Nobody I know uses a mask anymore because it and the goggles do not have an SFI cert to use in competition

WhiskeyRebel:
That sucks. I've seen guys run them at the old time drags lots, maybe I will ask them next year. Most of the time I run my simpson helmet.

Bell Helmets makes a Custom 500 that is DOT and ECE, which is equal to SNELL, and I think all racing sanctions reconize as equal to SNELL, ECE is a world wide tests, SNELL is only USA.
You may have to special order the Bells at a motorcycle shop, or of course check on-line, but on-line ordering is tricky getting the right size. Most people order helmets that are too big, they should be on the tight side because the inner liner will compress after you try them on after about 10-12 times. A too loose helmet will not give you the protection you want when buying a safty helmet. When I was selling M/C hemets I suggested trying on a smaller & smaller helmet until it hurts then go back one size, they ALL loosen up after the inner liner compresses to all the bumps in your head.
