Newby with a question
« on: October 27, 2016, 06:12:07 PM »
I thought this might be the best place to post an introduction.  I was around and ran in the Top Gas  bracket until NHRA killed it. I went into Funnycars then for about 8 years. My avatar has the last one on its last day in the nitro match races.  Of late I mounted the body and did the tin work on the Tom Hoover Showtime car the Doc Haliday of Telstar owns. Then I mounted the body and tin work on the Beartown Shaker a nostalgia fuel FC tribute car to Bill Schifsky for whom I worked for early on. I went back to engineering school, did 30 years hard labor HaHa then retired.

Today I cruise in my 41 Willys with a blown sbc. It's got 20+k miles so it gets around.

Now here is the question....there is some serious steak eating to be done by the winner as a bet.  As long as I can remember there were no single engine dragsters that ran a 6.99 or better before NHRA killed the class for 1972. There were a couple shortly after in procomp but they don't count.  There were some of the twins that did run a 6 and many ran 200+ but no single ran either or both. Can anyone show me a ligitmate 6 by a single engine TopGas dragster??

I've searched and scoured everywhere and I can't find any info to refute this that can prove it.  We ran ok at 7.50 190 occasionally as a single but we weren't the best.  As I recall 7.40 was getting it on and any thing over 190 was making tracks but alas no 6's and no 200's. I even asked Dennis Friend one of the instigators of 2 to go twin engine dragster site. He pointed me to a huge list OD runs but no 6 and no 200.

Actually in out NDRL series, we have a 7.00 class with a number of single engine dragsters that break out all the time. The dragsters are certainly capable of running faster that 7.00, but the index it 7.00.

I'm currently in the process of building a 1,200 HP engine which will go into a 200" single engine dragster when not tuned correct for 7.00 will go to fast.

So, yes there are single engine front engine dragsters out there that can go that fast.

Courtesy of Draglist.com - 1961 dragster owned by Tommy Ivo, the Ivo-Zeuschel Special.  First “gas dragster” to break into the 7s at San Gabriel on October 27, 1962.  7.990et with a 392ci supercharged Chrysler with direct drive from Draglist.  Into the 7s for a single engine gas dragster was quite a deed in 1962 or prior.  See link below and see item 547.

http://www.draglist.com/draglist/category.php?VIEW=Extended&CATEGORY%5B0%5D=GASDRAG&x=dragsters&SORTBY=YEAR+DESC%2CET%2CMPH+DESC%2CLNAME%2CFNAME%2CENTRY%2CENG%2CMAKE%2CMODEL%2CCHASSIS&page=18

Fast forward 10 years to 1972, just my “quick” check of Draglist, there were many single engine gas racers listed who made 200mph+ runs, didn’t see one into the 6s.  See items 87, 116, 118, 171, 177, 178, 186, 189, 200, 242, 257, 258, 259, 261, 264, 268 located on pages 3-9.  Lots of Chryslers, plus a Ford and a Chevy ran over 200mph, and there were probably more as the Draglist does have "unknown" listed for some racers.  Bentwings, looking at Draglist’s data, I’d guess nobody into the 6s through 1972.  A few wise ones were certainly “knocking on the door.”  Alan

p.s.  Draglist does add to their list which will modify above item numbers.

So BentWings you must know Jerry Newman, I drove his Top Fuel car to a Div 3 TF championship in 73, and just saw him at the Reunion in Bakersfield.
The Parisey-Hansen Top Gas [ BBC] ran 200 mph, in 70, but it was with two BBC.
Sorry, don't know who ran in the 6's and or 200 with a single.
But I will ask at the TopGas Reunion on Thursday before the NHRA World Finals
Cheers,
