Throttle cable trouble
« on: July 04, 2016, 06:47:15 AM »
I cant remember last when such a simple problem turned into such a head scratcher. My old engine used a braided cable on the hilborn injector. The cable ran over the motor plate from the rear of engine. When the throttle was pushed the cable pulled injector out towards the zoomie. Worked OK. New motor has a kinsler injector and the way it is set now needs to pull rearward. One more bend was required and just cannot get a smooth cable feel.
I think I'll need to flip my lever and pull from the front of the engine with a morse type cable. While I'm at it I should re engineer my pedal. Its the cast style that pulls from the rod slot.
Before I order parts I thought I'd check  to see what's working best.
Thanks in advance guys ;)

Morse "RED JACKET" controls are a solid wire and can only have one bend or the will lock up or become stiff. You need to order from a company in Santa fe Springs Ca. called "Control Cable" , Their units are a braided cable within a flat wound spring inside the housing. The cable pulls and the spring pushes for action as it glides through the housing. Mutiple and tight radious bends have no affect on action. Looks like you used a shifter unit with a threaded end and an eyelet end, CC can duplicate it exactly

also look at the relationship of the base - rod -peddle, from the pic the angle of the rod looks to be supporting the peddle and not getting behind the cable pick up point and driving the rod back to your heal. The top pivot of the peddle must be forward of the cable pick up

Throttle actuation mechanism is one area I need to improve in my car, so I apologize for the hijack.

Question: When using high quality Morse-type cables (like Control Cable), is it OK to have the cable being pushed when throttle pedal is depressed? Or is pulling it generally preferred?

hey bud:
FWIW.  To add to Bruce you just have to make sure the cable is rated for push.  You can get good info from Midwest control. They have good drawings with info.

The flat wound spring over braided cable (pic 2) gives it the push rating
because its a wound spring over braided wire cable gives it flexability without binding (pic 1) and as tight as I am holding the complete housing the operation is still smooth. Regular Red Jacket does not even come this close

Tied in a knot and the operation is still smooth

Thanks for the good info guys. Frank Parks was telling me about a cable he stocks. Not really woven and not really morse and very flexible. Probably the same brand.
Do you have pictures for "what works" for pedal pull. I see some pull off the top of the pedal then loop beside your leg to the lower chassis tube then foreword to the front of engine and up to injector.
Others hinge the pedal up a few inches and pull off the bottom of the pedal.

You can still use the same cable mount on the injector shown, just get a longer cable to loop forward to the mounted peddle you already have (if the peddle is in a good location for you already) and use a cable clamp to hold the housing to the frame. A quick disc should not be used because they can be hard to mount without having sharps into your leg

I missed this discussion yesterday but Bruce is totally correct. The pro teams all use the Control Cables unit in both push and pull applications for throttle, fuel shut off, hi-lo and shifter (reverser).  I have been using them for 20 plus years and have never had a problem.
There is only one cable that may be marginally better and that is the one used by the Indy car guys and it runs about double the price.

Thank you all.

So I hear no disadvantages to push the cable to open the throttle? (when using Control Cables)
