Helmet Paint Job Looks LIke old silver mask
« on: December 26, 2015, 01:22:47 PM »
Has anybody got a photo?? I saw a full face helmet airbrushed to look like an old school fire mask with filters and it looked amazing--I can't seem to find a pix of it anywhere--I am sure some of you have seen it--way cool and I was thinking of getting my Bandit Simpson done that way--from 10 ft away it looked like real deal--just no way I am racing without full face and it looks so out of place in my old car
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have always had a fascination with fast cars at the expense of more normal character development

The guy that painted it is a old school sign painter...not many of them left around. The red was loaded with flake and you can see pieces of it reflecting in that photo. He actually used rubber undercoating to make the goggle strap so it would look more realistic then cleared over it.

Way cool, I had been looking at going full old school, with open face etc. Is there any safety benefits from going full face helmet?

Just about everything--more integrity to the helmet itself, better face protection from possible impacts, flipping a visor up is a lot easier than getting goggles out of the way, easier communication with crew (ever tried to talk through a breather type face mask?).
I am old enough and have been racing long enough (and cackling more recently) to have done it both ways. I was in the first dozen or so in Australia to purchase a full face and definitely the first to use one in a dragster (back in 1969/70 or so) down there as I could see the benefits.

Its about rules when discussing the face mask.  The reality is that the face mask does not carry an SFI spec/rateing and the goggles have glass lenses. other issues come to fitment to your head. With the extra padding in the forhead area, some of the foam liner in the helmet has to be removed in order to get the helmet to sit properly to the drivers head and most new open helmets worthy of raceing with  have cheak guards and thaose interfere with the filters--These mods violates the helmet spec/rateing and tech will bounce you if caught. If you dont do the mod, then the helmet sits over an inch above your head and the chin strap becomes too short also, Scary deal in a crash
