So harmonics have been discussed. Is there any advantage to a belt drive rather than the ease of adjustment?

The belt drive vs timing chain vs gear drive discussion will live on forever.
Every Comp Eliminator car and Pro Stock engine has a belt drive. Can't argue with High End technology.
I put a gear drive on everything I can, but only good quality. Lots of junk on the market.
I run almost every engine on our dyno before sending them out.
I'v seen timing retard with the lower cost belt drives. [Some company's should just stick to camshafts]
Ease of adjustment is great on the dyno for testing.

Here is my thoughts----
Chains are for bicycles
Belts are OK if you plan regulating engine temp to a constant and tension the belt accordingly, if not then the gear gives room for expansion as the engine heats up. I set my blower belt tension by idler slippage and after the run it is tighter.

All in all, "harmonics"  at our level is not an issue, but some members on this board can sure"pick the fly xxxx out of the pepper". Been running and a top competitor for over 20 years BUILD IT - TUNE IT - RUN IT

I have never been a big fan of chains . I broke one once and it was a disaster . I ran a Summers gear drive for may years without a single problem . Today I run a Jessel belt drive and it works very well and very easy to make valve timing changes . If you are running a lot of lift and big springs I would say yes to the belt drive . Bill

Maybe its just me, but I have never gone to a race with the thought of ever having to change my cam timing from where I set it when I built the engine.

I think that given the short runs harmonics aren't so harmful to a drag engine. Just my opinion.

The Jesel belt drive saved my bacon because in my engine the piston-to-valve clearance was less than desirable and the belt drive allowed me to "split the difference" and keep my current parts. I'll confess I also like its cool looks.
