First 1/4 mile runs
« on: August 03, 2015, 11:40:13 PM »
Had my first weekend with 1/4mile racing. Great event and the weather was good for almost the entire weekend.
Started "bad"...i had forgotten to properly secure the clip that holds the shifter cable wich resulted in that i couldnt find 2.nd gear. Lesson learned. 1/8 6.34 and 1/4 11.64
Next round i lost focus and turned off early. 1/8 6.16 1/4 10.39
On the third run i deep staged, wich i thought was not allowed, so i reversed it...stupid me.
1/8 11.25 1/4 14.77....but this time top speed was 222.22 km/h
Run nr four was better 60ft 1.407 1/8 6.08 and 1/4 9.57, speed 222.91 km/h
On the fifth run i tried to step on the brake and get a little bit more rpm, but was a fiasco and i bogged off the start with a red light. 60ft 1.67 1/8 6.34 and 1/4 9.76 - better speed this time, 228.57 km/h.
Engine is running very rich, so i changed the main pill from 060 to 070 before the eliminations started on sunday..
60ft 1.32 1/8 5.90 and 1/4 9.29 - 233 km/h
Red light again, and im out. Thats life.
Engine is still running rich, im not using the trans breake, i dont have ANY electronics or ways to help me....other than a oil pressure gauge for my team to check once in a while.
Think i really need a tach and wire the trans brake. Not sure what to aim for, but it feels like there is lots more in it...

Nice!

Keep after it, do the trans brake before the tach.

How much do you think i can improve my 60 foots with using the trans brake?

I was lucky to get my car on the scales, and it weighs 607.5 KG with full tank (but not me included)!
Another question, how much air should i have in the tyres? We ran between 6.5 and 7 on all six runs.

Here`s a few pictures...

You are doing great just keep at it! Sit in the car while in the garage and "simulate" a run all the way from start up/ burn out/ stage/ etc  Practice it over and over again  It really helps
70 is in the right direction sounds like--try that a while--remember one change at a time /try it out real good before doing another change
Foot braking that car is fine--will do great while you learn.
A Transbrake HAS to be wired up carefully --You hit that button by accident while running down track and you will get to meet the safety workers in person

I say foot brake for a long while until you get YOUR act together as a driver/operator then worry about going faster--really!

You are doing as good as anyone that first started out--Be safe and get your routine together
Congrats!
I have always had a fascination with fast cars at the expense of more normal character development

What does the race track do to prepare the racing surface?

What does the race track do to prepare the racing surface?

Its a fully prepped track. They ran a top fueler there at the same event for show. Lots of super twin bikes etc...

I got an invite to run for show at vw event at the same track next weekend, so i will run the same setup again as many times as i can, then try to lean a little bit on the next event.
Also checking if the high speed has been activated. Got a tip to put a little grease at the bottom of the pill holder.

Not sure, i was busy with my own car so didnt get the chance to watch it, only hear it  8)
But i know they had tuned it down quite a bit to save things as they run in the European series...

I was trying to get an idea of what the fully prepped track would hold. Our local track puts a lot into track preparations and it give big results. Our injected 355 SBC ran 1.07-1.10 60'on alky. The 377 blower motor was running sub 1.0 60' but broke the rear end 2 x. it has been common to see racers run their best ever times at Central Illinois Dragway. George

8 3/4" 742. Blower torque and trans brake were too much for it. I was a nice setup when we ran the injected combo. George

Dont go by these 60' numbers because the car runs 30" of overhang which makes those numbers for 58'

My blown car @1650# and NO overhang leaving off the hand brake would be consistent  1.12 60'

 What size tire is that?

One thing you have to remember about this board is that most of us find the metric system quite confusing and weight and speed numbers dont relate to what we are use to seeing

New personal best two times this weekend!  8)
1/4 @ 9.17
then
1/4 @ 9.08  (60ft = 1.300, 1/8 = 5.76)

Tried to step ut up a little on the main pill from .070 to .075 after the 9.08 run, but it didnt make any noticable difference and i did two 9.3`s. Bad start on one, and shifted a little bit early on the other - my fault.
I ran without trans brake this time also, but im not getting any good starts (low rpm), so im going to wire it up before next race.
