Bad condenser
(1/1)
TopfuelRon:
I have a standard vertex Mag in a 1970 Nova, would a bad condenser make it pop back threw the carb at idle, I checked compression and I have 180 pounds, checked the valve train nothing seems loose valves all seem to be getting full lift, ??
Spud Miller:
Nope, a bad condenser will generally leave you with no spark at all. If it's weak or underrated, you might get an occasional pop here and there as the points arc, but that is very unusual. Generally a condenser is good until it's totally bad.
An intake pop is usually a lean condition. It could be a plugged idle circuit in the carb, an intake gasket sucking air somewhere...something making one or more cylinders lean. I'd check the exhaust with a heat gun and see if any stick out as being hot. That might lead you to something.

I just rebuilt the carb and i was thinking that too! I'll bust out the temp gun. maybe a bad power valve?
BK:
Unless the power valve is stuck shut it wont create a lean condition. Normally if a power valve goes bad it creates a rich condition.
