ATF for FED's Powerglide?

(1/2) > >>

Hey guys,
Any recommendations for transmission fluid for my FED’'s glide? It’s a 1.76:1 with manual valve body, transbrake and Coan 4500 rpm converter. It’s not a high buck deal by any means (homebuilt SBC400). I haven’t opened up this glide yet (it came with the car-roller), but so far so good. It does leak profusely while parked. I plan pulling it out sometime to refresh or at least change gaskets and seals.

What’s the approximated fluid capacity (standard pan, no cooler)?

Anything special when selecting a dipstick for it?

Thanks as always.

I use NAPA brand type F fluid in both my cars. NAPA brand is packaged Ashland oil which is Valoline. I have customers that use everything from hydraulic fluid to the expensive synthetic.
There seems to be no right or wrong. As far as amount of fluid. You will need 7 or 8 with your combo. I would start checking at 6 just to be safe on not over filling.

Any of the aftermarket stick and tubes will work great just make sure its a locking type. And most likely your leak while sitting is coming from around the dip stick tube if its a stock one. As you converter drains off from sitting it over fills the trans above the o ring on the tube and causes a leak. The aftermarket ones that use the GM boot type seal work wonders at stopping this issue.
