test or wait to final combo
« on: April 17, 2015, 05:40:14 PM »
Car is getting closer to play time, still have few big items to get and having to choose. I can get combo I have together and test car and tune it some or I can wait little longer to get some replacement parts and tune it for more finalized setup.

Main item that will change is cam.Present cam is 296-500 crane(296@.050) and cam I think it needs is 280/270 @.050. Big change and bunch of torque differance about 70# gain in powerband. My thinking is while getting chassis checked out and shake down run tuning will be fun. With such huge change i tuning s about useless due to effect on converter and tire setup will change.

Guess question is. Other than fun(thats huge) will there be any gain in testing before can get new cam.Normally not big deal but with raised cam hemi and custom grind with 4/7 swap its not cheap piece.Heck can buy battery, starter and wiring for cost of it.

Every steel roller cam I've ever owned was bought used as a core & reground to make it usable for my combo. Most charge around $80

How many of those used cams are for raised cam motor and have a 4/7 swap? I have a bunch of cams but there are limits as to how much they can be changed and with most being for blower motor max effort setup they are way big for NA motor. Have checked with quite a few and charge is no where near 80 closer to 200 and still not optimum cam at that. Cost for cam is closer to  550 on this deal.

Its not that I mind spending money just have pieces needed to get me on track. Getting there sooner is tempting asd all get out.At same time don't want to make bunch of runs tuning car and just have to rework it after cam swap. If not for effect it will have on converter and the fact that seems to be number one piece for tuning a PG equiped car I would even think about it. 16* duration and the added tq motor will have amke me think maybe best to get setup as close as possible before hitting track maybe smarter nove,

I thought this was just a bracket car. Run what you have this year change cam over winter. I doubt it will be slow.

Hey who said can't be fast bracket? I agree with 1050 to 1100 hp  526 all aluminum Hemi and hopefully under 1550 lbs it should be quick.     Have a top of l;ine cam grinder checking cams I have to see if one can be ground dwon to my specs. Getting the open and close points I want is the trick. Will see.
