Slick goes flat
« on: December 06, 2014, 12:46:21 PM »
I have M/T slicks with no tubes. One goes flat in about 2 days. It is currently off the wheel so I can get a small adjustment made to the backspace. Short of fitting tubes any thing I can do to the slick while it's off to stop or slow this?

I coat mine when they are brand new and it helps a lot . I was worried about it at one time so I called Goodyear to ask it meant that the side wall was bad because thats where they leak . He told me about the soap trick and also said that's when they really get fast !

Ive never tried soaping a used tire...Not sure if it will go or not. When new, We take a large bottle of Dawn and put 1/2 in each tire and rub it in till its gone. The Fiat is on the stands in the shop since September and have just started to go flat. Through the summer, Might have to add a pound or two between races.

Same here, I have to add a pound or two between races, The dragster is sitting in the garage and had to air up the tires last weekend.

Any chance you checked for leaks before to took the tire off ? Like soapy water, and look for bubbles ?  If it's leaking thru the side wall, try the soap film on the inside. Or could it be leaking from the bead thru the screws that you have in the wheel to keep the low pressure tire from spinning. I have seen this before, and what fixed it was putting silicon seal in the screw holes, and indents in the tire bead. Sometimes the screw goes too deep into the bead, too long screw, and or narrower bead.
Or of course, install an inner tube, I think Hoosier has big slick tubes. One possible plus would be the tire will build more heat with the tube , because of friction between the tire and tube. Maybe shorter burn-outs then ?

Let us know what works.

Hey all thanks for the tips. Yep I soaped up the rim/bead and the valve stem ect when I fitted these up. No sign of anything leaking. So for now I've soaped 'it up with green tea and lime flavored dish washing liquid. If nothing else it's going to smell sweet in the burn out !

I my experiences they all leak. That's all brands and sizes. I put the car on stands , front and back and air them up when it's time to roll.
