Fuel pump sizing.
« on: July 22, 2014, 09:27:15 PM »
Is there a set formula for determining what size pump you need?

The question is for the Enderle 80a-0, 80a-.5, and a 80a-1.

Engines in question are both SBC/ injected with a Bug.

Engine 1 is a 383, aluminum heads/200 runners, 13:1 Compression, MSD electronic ignition. Engine is a old circle track job with a .640 roller. Launch at 4200, shift at 6400, crosses around 6800-6900. Runs 8.90's 1/4 mile at 145-146.

Engine 2 is a 406, aluminum heads/220 runners, 12.6:1 Compression, same ignition. This engine is new and still at the shop for assembly.

Drag car application, 1700 lbs race ready, 2 spd glide w/5800 stall, 4:11 rear gear.

I like to size the fuel pump so that the setup will typically use a main pill in the .100 - .130" range. A step of .005" in that range is a good increment...not so small that you need to jump two steps to do anything noticeable and not so big that you miss the sweet spot.

When in doubt, get the bigger pump...getting rid of fuel is easy. Making more with a particular pump later is impossible unless you want to mess with pulley sizes or pump overdrives. Without doing any head scratching, I'd say get the -1 pump. The smaller models are usually used on 4 bangers and other small applications.

I actually have the -1 on the 383 now and would move it over to the 406 when it's ready.  Just wasn't sure if it was just too effeciant. I'm running it with the high speed blocked off as I've never turned it around so it could function.
